This piece began with hesitation. The mediums were new—unpredictable in texture and flow—and the colour palette wasn’t mine. It was chosen by my daughter, a mix of soft purples, moody blues, and rose gold tones that felt foreign to my usual instinct as an artist. I handed over creative control, something I rarely do, and let her vision lead.
What followed was a process of deep internal resistance. The canvas didn’t behave. My hands didn’t move the way they normally do. There were moments of frustration, moments where I wanted to wipe it clean and start again. But beneath that chaos was something more—something tender. A quiet voice reminding me this wasn’t just about the paint.
This artwork became a reflection of relationship. Of letting go. Of creating space for someone else’s perspective. It’s about the messiness of growth and the beauty that comes when we step outside our comfort zone, not to abandon ourselves, but to honour connection.
Each layer carries emotion—struggle, patience, love—and each brushstroke is a blend of my experience and hers. The result is something that feels both unfamiliar and honest. It's not perfectly polished. It wasn't meant to be. It’s real.
Tangled in Her Colours is a tribute to the power of shared creation. A reminder that sometimes, when we allow others to colour outside our lines, something entirely new and meaningful emerges.
